Can't open 09 Numbers files in Excel 08

A friend is sending me files made in Numbers 09.

I can not open them with either Numbers 08 or Excel for Mac 08.

Are there any conversion tools out there?

If there is it would most likely come from Apple by way of an update ‹ at
least for iWork 08 ‹ and I doubt you'd see anything from MS as Excel doesn't
really offer support for either version format.

I believe the best bet is to have your friend create a copy using Save As in
order to produce a copy other people can open.
