cant open a file getting a locked for editing error

I created a excel 2000 spreadsheet and now when I try to open it it opens a
box titled "file in use" and says "filename.xls is locked for editing by
(NAME). I'm at home running XP with two users and my user name only has
access to this file. How do I get this file open?
