Can't open a file in MS Project 2003

D

dwizz

I have a project file that when I try to open it I get an error message that
says MS Project has encountered a problem and needs to close. After I respond
to the message it takes me back to a blank project titled Project1 as if I
was building a new project. The project was created in a version of MS
Project earlier then 2003. It's also part of a master project plan.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

dwizz,
How much earlier than Project 2003? Prior to Project 98? What exactly do
you mean, "...part of a master project plan"? Is this file one of
several subproject files inserted into a master? Do the other subproject
files open? Does the master open?

Without any further information it sounds like that file is corrupt. You
might want to go to our MVP website at,
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm, and take a look at FAQ 43 -
handling project file corruption and/or bloat.

The file was created with MS Project 2000. It's one of 7 sub-project files in
the master. Two other sub-projects don't open as well. The master file opens.

dwizz,
OK, so it sounds like you have more than one corrupt file. Did you try
the steps in the FAQ?

When you say the master does open, do all 7 subprojects also open, that
is, are all their tasks shown or do you just see the summary line
insertion point of each subproject in the master?

John,

1. I tried the steps in the FAQ but as soon as I opened the file the error
message comes up and prevents me from doing any type of save operation. I can
only respond to the error message about sending or not sending the error to
Microsoft.

2. All the subprojects tasks are visable in the master file.

Were you able to resolve this issue? If so, how? I have had the same error
when attempting to open one of my projects.

Hello lebowman,

What version of Project? The original post was about a proejct file
created in a version of project earlier that 2003.

Is the project part of a master project?

I assume by the "same error" I assume you mean that project crashes when
you try to open a specific project file.

Have you tried detect and repair?

A bit more information (what version, only one project or all projects,
etc.) will help us help you better.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

JulieS:
Using 2003 Professional. Project created in 2003 Professional. Size of file
is 378 KB
Project is not a part of any other project. This is the only project
giving an error message.

The error message received when attempting to open the project:

"The operation cannot be completed because the source file contains invalid
project data or the total number of rows would exceed the limit of 1,048,000
rows in a project. Validate the data in the source file, insert fewer
rows, delete some rows, or consider dividing your project into subprojects to
proivde more space for tasks and resources"

When I click on OK, a new empty project named Project1 opens.

I just tried 'detect and repair' - still cannot open project.

Do you have any other suggestions? I would be most appreciative.

Hi Lebowman,

I was not able to find a fix for the problem. Even when the project opens
for a few seconds it won't allow me to perform any type of functions before
it closes. The only conclusion I can come to is that the plans will have to
be recreated.

Hello,

Was the file password protected? What service pack level are you
running?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
