Can't open a file

M

Someone is trying to send me a Word Document that is about 70 pages long. She
has sent it to me twice and each time I get the following error when
attempting to open it:

The document or path is not valid. Try these suggestions, * Check the file
permissions for the document or drive, * Use the File Open dialog box to
locate the document.

I have right clicked the file and unblocked the file. I still get the same
error message. I have saved the file to My Documents, so I know the path is
correct. Every attmpt at opening the file gives me the same error.

I'm running Word 2002, SP3. I've e-mailed the woman to see what version of
Word she's running to see if there is a conflict.

Can anyone help me? I'd sure appreciate it.

If you are trying to open the document directly from an email, save it to
disk from the email first.

Then, from within Word, use File Open to open it. What happens?

Hey All-
I had the same problem.
Was the Word Doc created with a template?
If yes, you also need the template file, since the doc is probably
linked to the template.

I don't know, but I e-mailed her to ask. She's not very computer savay, so
we'll see. I told her she could copy the text and include it in an e-mail,
but the document is 70 pages log. Rather a lengthy e-mail.

Thanks.

She responded back and told me that all she did was type in Word, with no
templates. She mentioned that every time she opens the file, she has to
re-format the document because the document changes every time she closes it.
Any other suggestions... anyone?

Thanks.

Make sure that in the File Open dialog she has "Word Documents" or "All Word
Documents" selected, not "Recover Text from Any File."

I finally heard back from the lady. She had converted the file to Adobe
Acrobat for me, but I asked her what version of Word she was running. She was
running XP 2003. I have XP 2002. I've never run into a conflict with Word
opening from another version, but the 2003 version really messes up the works
and you can't open the files with previous versions of Word. I guess it's
Microsoft's guarantee that you'll dish out the bucks to upgrade.

I tried 2003 XP Office Pro, having spent the money on it, and I hated it.
Everything was changed and some of the features I liked were missing. I
uninstalled it and now it is worthless, as I activated it on my machine. Now
nobody else can use it, either. (I'm not very happy with Microsoft, as you
can tell.)

Every Word document is created with a template. No exceptions.

You do not need the template to open the document but if you do not have the
template and you are on a network it can take extra time to open the
document while Word searches your network to try to find the template.

There is no version XP 2003.

Word 2003 documents can be opened in Word 97 or later unless advanced
features are used in the document.

Word 2003 has few features that are not included in Word 2002 (XP), mostly
it implements features introduced in Word 2002 better. There were much
bigger changes between Word 97 and Word 2000 and then again between Word
2000 and Word 2002.

The only was I was able to open the file was for her to save it in an earlier
version. After that I could open it. If there is no such thing as Office
2003, then what the heck did I spend the money for???? After opening each
application, and especially Publisher and Excel, they were very different
than Office 2002 for XP and the files couldn't be opened by earlier versions
of either. A hassle to say the least for someone who sends files to others in
the company.

There is no such thing asWord 2003 does run on Windows XP. Perhaps that what you meant. There is an
Office XP which has Word XP which is Word 2002.

Word 2003 is very similar to Word 2002. This is a Word newsgroup. People
responding to posts here are volunteers, not Microsoft employees. They are
your fellow users trying to help you get a handle on a very complex product.
I would suggest that you address your complaints about Publisher and Excel
directly to Microsoft rather than posting on a peer-to-peer support
newsgroup about Word.

I stand by what I said which is quoted below:
