Cant open a read-only document

I have prepared a read-only document for use on a shared network. The
problem is that only some of the users can open the document. The
dialogue box is presented to the user. They click on the read-only
button and the dialogue box dissappears but the document doesn't open.
It happens on some but not all Windows XP machines. Any assistance
would be greatly appreciated.
