Can't open access database

When trying to open an access database both normally and via shift-click I
get the following error message and the database will not open, I also get
the same error when trying to import/export to it via SQL, when trying to
open a copy of the mdb file and when trying to "get external data" in an
attempt to import into a new database.

"The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because you and
another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time".

I have confirmed that I am the only person accessing the database, there is
no idb file available or being created and I have emptied the temp folder. I
just can't figure out what I can do to get into it, we use this database to
run our business so it is pretty important that I do...

Have you closed out of it improperly this morning or yesterday
afternoon (Ended the tast in task manager, shut down in the middle of a
process, etc.)?

Hi Matt,

Yes we experienced a network crash and the database froze up. Following that
it was 'end tasked'

First backup your database, it may have been damaged. If it is damaged you
want it "as is" to give you best chance of recovering and identifying data
added since last backup.

look for a small .ldb file with the same name as your database. Thjis is
the Access locking file, and, if you are lucky, is the sole cause of you
problem. back that up too, so that you can go back to "As is", then delete
it.

If you can get into your database now run Compact and repair. Run any
integrity checks that you may have, and check last entered data. If all
seems OK, proceed as normal.

Unfortunately there is no idb file, I have tried backing the database onto a
different device, but am still unable to open either copy (same error
message).

Do you have a previous backup?

It is good practice to save a backup of your database weekly, if not
more often. This way if you do have some problem where you can not
access the database you only lose a few days worth of data(A daily
backup would be best policy, but is not always practical depending on
the amount of information you recieve.)

Sometimes when you 'End Task' a database it will cause the file to
become corrupt. There are times when Compact and Repair will save you
here, and there are times when it will not (Side note here, you should
also Compact & Repair your database at least bi-weely, if not more.
Before you do this however, you should save your backup incase
something happens during the Compact & repair process, such as a freeze
up, because it is very likely that you will not be able to get back
into the file.)


If the compact and repair does not work for you I would suggest going
to the Access support forums or support page on www.msdn.com and see if
they have tips for you.
