Can't open attached tables

I'm running Access2000, SP-3. This problem shows up on both
the XP machine, and the WinME machine. They are both
stand-alone machines, but if I copy the databases from one
machine to the other, the problem is the same.

I've got a bunch of databases where, when I attach to their
tables, for some reason, I can't open the tables. It's
consistent from one session to the next. In some databases,
I can open some tables, and not others.

When I open the databases directly, the tables look OK, and
I can compile and compact.

If I open an OK table, then open a bad table, I cannot then
go back an open the good table in the same session. I get
an error that wants to call in to Microsoft.

If I try to delete the bad attached table, I hear the beep,
but nothing happens, and if I close the database and open
it, the table still appears to be there, although I cannot
open nor delete nor look at it in design view, although I
can do all those with the good attached table, from the same
database.

The trouble is, I have a whole bunch of these databases (20
or so), that I had been working last spring, for months. I
went back to this project about a week ago, and that's when
this problem bit me.

I'm trying to remember if I was working with Access 2002
when I was building those. Is there a way I can tell from my
WinXP machine what version of Access created a database? (I
took Access 2002 off, it was causing me too much grief).

Many thanks,
