can't open copy of .doc -office 97-XP

I have a IBM Thinkcentre with XP SP1 and Office 97
installed.
When attempting to open a document in use by another user
an error similar to that discussed in KB article 173547
(case 2) occurs. Apparently this is due to having a
partition larger than 2GB. The IBM's are setup with one
large partition as part of their Rapid Restore system.
The work around suggested says to change the TEMP variable
to point to a partition with less than 2GB. No can do.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

I second the upgrade recommendation if that's the situation you'll run into
often. 6 years is a long time for systems to change and A97 just was not
designed for today's larger computers and drive partitions.

If you can't do that, another option would be, if you have enough RAM, to
create a RAM drive (remember those from DOS) and set the temp and tmp
environment variables to the RAM drive. The problem will be that in most
situations all temp files are written to that temporary variable directory
and the RAM required could be substantial.

In Winxp there's no Ramdrive.sys like there was in Win9.x or 3.x, so you
have to use a third party driver to create a Ram drive. Here's a couple of
links (haven't tried these so use at your own risk).
