can't open database

Was the database file secured by someone? If yes, you may be pointing to the
wrong workgroup file (.mdw). You may have administrator priviledges on your
workstation but not on the .mdb file.

2 questions:
1) Where did you get the name "WORKGROUP" ?
2) How did you open the file in the old computer? Did you double-click the
mdb file or was there a special shortcut created for you for this database?

If there was a shortcut, then look at it's properties, there should be a
path to an mdw file.

Within Access, (a database doesn't even need to be open), choose Tools,
Security, Workgroup Administrator, and then point to that *.MDW file.

Don't forget to go back to your original MDW file when done or trying to
access another database, or creating a new database.

Your default MDW is probably in a place like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Access\System.mdw

I really thought that you DID need to have a database open; is this
different in each version of Access?

in fact; I swear I just went throguh this in the real world with
someone yesterday and they couldn't do it until they created a blank
database (without security) then they could get to the security option

All of a sudden, I am getting the following Microsoft Office Access popup
when I try to open my database.

"The current user account doesn't have permission to convert or enable this
database.
To convert or enable a database, ensure the following:
*You must join the workgroup that defines the user accounts used to access
the database.
*Your user account must have Open/Run and Open Exclusive permissions for the
database object.
*Your user account must have Modify Design or Administer permission for all
tables in the database,
or it must be the owner of all tables in the database.
*Your user account must have Read Design permission for all objects in the
database.
*Request that others close the database."

I am on a single station (not part of a workgroup) that is w2k. I have
administrator privileges.

HELP Please.

Thanks!!!

It was created on a different computer. That computer is having problems.
We
have to get this database open however.

How can I point to the correct workgroup file?? The workgroup name is
"WORKGROUP"
on the computer that used this database.

Thanks so much for your help!!!

I just tried to open the database on a computer that has Access 2007.
But once again it says that I need Read Design permission

I coulda been a contenda ...

I wasn't paying attention, who knows about Acc07 ... wow.

In past versions, there used to be a file (hopefully someone else on this
discussion group can help) called something like: wrkgrpadmn.exe (work group
admin) I can never remember the name, in the Program Files or WINNT directory.

Clicking on that gives you the same thing as the Tools menu I gave you.

If I can think of the file name ...

Makes me wanna see Access 2007 - no tools menu. Even with a db open in the
window? Wow. I'm behind the times.

Thanks very much Ray. That was a big help. I had a support company working
on
it at the same time. They were able to repair the database.

Again, thanks VERY much. Your info was very useful.

If I had just known this yesterday I could of been the hero(ine).
I could'a been a contender. ;-)

By the way, how do you do this in Access 2007. I couldn't even find
"Tools" on the one computer that has it.
