Can't open .doc files without being asked to convert and then can'tread

Processor: Intel

I have Word 2008 for Mac on a desktop and laptop... both installed from the same disk, different serial numbers.

I have them setup to save files as .doc (94-2004) so if I email files, people who haven't upgraded can read them. If I create a file on the desktop and try to open in on my laptop, I get the Convert file window. When I select "Microsoft Word" I get the message " The XML file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents." It sites Incorrect document syntax Location:1

If I open it as a text file, it is unreadable. But if I send it to someone else who also has Mac 2008, they can open it without problems.

I have downloaded and installed all available updates.

Is there a setting that got messed up on my laptop?

I would say that the laptop is mistakenly un-zipping the file.

A Word .docx file is a zip file, but if you unzip it, Word can't read it.

Make sure you have "Open "safe" attachments after downloading" turned OFF in
Safari, otherwise you get this problem.

And let go of .doc as soon as you can -- it switches off a lot of the new
features in Word 2008, and takes up twice the disk space of .docx.

Cheers
