Can't open docs that are password protected

Documents that are protected against modification, when attempting to open
them in read only mode they dont open. They open ok on every other machine.
This is true for documents created on said machine. If you enter password to
modify then they open ok.

Sorry but there's something confusing about your description.

"...when attempting to open them in read only mode they don't open"
"They open ok on every other machine."
"This is true for documents created on said machine."

Do you mean that documents created on ANY OTHER PC and assigned Read Only
won't open on just that one PC but Read Only documents created on that PC
will open Read Only?

Are they all running the same edition of Word with the same ServicePacks?

Sorry for the confusion
Documents that have been password protected against modification, when you
open them you are given a choice of either entering the password to modify
the doc or open it as a read only document. If you put in the password
everything works ok but if you choose to open it as read only the document
does not open and reacts in identical manner as if you have pressed a cancel
button. I have tried to open the documents on other machines in the building
and they all work perfectly. These documents are test results from an
external source and therefore must not be modified. I have created test docs
on this machine with identical results. I have tried the following.

renaming the normal.dot file
logging in as administrator
starting in safe mode
uninstalling and reinstalling into a different directory
giving everyone full control permission on every part of the disk drive

The process was working fine untill last week when there was a problem in
booting up the machine I did a "fixboot" after that everything seemed to work
ok until a few days later when they tried to open one of these test reports.
I don't know if these two events are connected. It seems odd that would cause
such a relative small problem.

I hope that is clearer
Hugh

It may be simple: try reregistering Word. See

Let us know if that does it.
