Can't open document, a dialog box is open message

I'm trying to help a friend long distance. He can't open documents. He gets
a message saying a dialog box is open, but there is no dialog box. Someone
helped him save and access photo files and now he has this problem with his
regular files. He turns the computer off and back on. Same problem. Went
through Start and Explore and had the same problem. A message comes up
saying a dialog box is open. Any ideas?

This often comes from the Norton Office Plug-in. If he is running Norton
AntiVirus, instruct him to disable the plug-in as follows:

1. Open Norton AntiVirus (right-click on the Systray icon and choose this
option).

2. Click on the Options button at the top of the dialog.

3. In the Options dialog, click on Miscellaneous (menu on the left)

4. Clear the check box for "Enable Office Plug-in."

5. OK out and close NAV.

Note that doing this does NOT compromise his virus protection, since NAV
scans any document before you open it, anyway.

Thank you Suzanne. He doesn't have Norton's. May be a problem with Word as
his other applications are working.

If he's getting a message that a dialog box is open, tell him to minimize
Word and see if a dialog is open behind the Word window.
