cant open document

When trying to open a word document i saved, i get the following message
"document name or path is not valid"
How do i check the path etc is there anyway i can recover, this is the
problem i have with all word documents in this one folder, is it a folder
problem ?, it opens and displays all the contents but wont let me open the
document they all display the same error message

Hi Anne, this is just one word document in the folder (D:\private
files\carlton.doc)
