Can't open documents from within Excel

I also have the same problem with Excel for 95. I can
open the program, but I cannot open any files from the
recent list off the menu bar. I get this error:
myfile.xls: file format is not valid. This file was
created in Excel for Win. 95. I can open the file if I go
to my documents and open the file from there. This is
strange, can anyone help? I am running on Windows 98 SE.
Thanks for any words of wisdom.....
