Can't open Excel attachments

Someone sends me an Excel file as an attachment. When I
click on it and ask it to "Open It" -- I get the
following error message:

Windows cannot find "C:\Documents and
Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\G3PFUEZL\(filename).xls". Make sure you
typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search
for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

I have a brand new computer running Windows NT, OE6 and
Excel 2003. Part of the problem is that Temporary
Internet Files\Content.IE5 is not under Documents and
Settings\Owner\Local Settings. It is under WINNT\Temp.

Now my old computer would just see that it was an .xls
file and open the damn thing in Excel. Why won't the new
one work that way? (It opens e-mail attachment Word
documents, Adobe documents, etc., just fine). I have to
save it to disk before I can open it, and mostly I just
want to look at it, maybe print it and blow it off. I
have no need to save it.

Sometimes one of these works when you double click on a file in windows
explorer--maybe one will work for you with your email program:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

An alternative might be to do:
Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

You are running Windows NT on a brand new computer? Sure you are not running at
least Win2000? (esp since 2003 works on Win2000 and higher)

In Excel, Go to Tools, Options, General and uncheck ignore other applications.

With the NT technology there are multiple TIF directories -- If you enable
hidden and system files, you will be able to go to the exact location OE is
refering to
