Can't Open File!!! Help!

R

RickGreg

A file I've been working on for some time (which will be hard to re-create
without lots of hours!) suddenly won't open.

I've tried double clicking the file and opening from within Excel, but each
time, I get the "Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to
close...." error box.

Excel eventually re-opens with a new workbook, but not my file.

I backed up the file earlier today, so I can re-capture it with only a few
lost hours of edits... But I am concerned that there may be some underlying
corruption that could come back and get me.

Can you suggest any way to recover this file, or at a minimum check my prior
version for signs of corruption?

The file contains a few simple macros and lots of drop-down boxes. It will
not open even if I "disable" macros.

Would the MS Error Reporting info provide any clues?

Thank you.

OKAY... I emailed the file to my other Mac (same version of Excel). It
opened fine. I re-saved it and emailed it back to this Mac... And it opened
fine again. I noticed one error in the file which I fixed... A drop-down
box had lost its cell reference info.

All is fine, EXCEPT I am nervous about a repeat event. Anything I can do to
check this file?

Are there any links to other Excel workbooks? Even if unintentional, check
under file-links.

I ran the Link Find tool. Didn't find any links to external workbooks, but
did find and delete some #REF! broken internal references. Could these
cause similar corruption symptoms? Hope I don't have a time bomb on my
hands! Thx.

Sorry for late reply,There's no general answer. It could be but if could be something else.
Personally I wouldn't think interanl ref will cause such problem. Could be
macro. Just quick question if you start at A1 cell and push ctrl (or
apple)+shift+end when the selection will end? At the end of your data or bit
further than your data? If further than remove all line/columns after the
point when your data ends.
If you are worried you could find some SW for Excel corrupted files
recovery, but they are not free.
Hope this will help a bit.
