Can't open file in Word/Excel 2007

I am suddenly unable to open or save a file in Word or Excel 2007. I get no
error message -- nothing happens except that the menu disappears.

I'm running Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1.

These apps have worked perfectly since I bought the computer. Haven't
changed anything in months.

This came out of the blue about a week ago.

I looked at support files on microsoft.com and saw nothing similar.

I went into Control Panel and did a Repair on Office 2007, which didn't cure
the problem.

This problem also affects Wordpad, whatever that means.

Ideas?
