can't open files in onenote

I have onenote 2003 and I just got a new laptop, installed it and then tried
to open my backed up files which are onenote 2003 files and I keep getting a
message that says "this file is from a later version of onenote" but it's
not!!!

What can I do?

Have you installed the SP1 (or rather, SP3 by now) update to OneNote
2003 on your new laptop? You should be able to get it from Microsoft Update.
