Can't open intranet links on some PC's

Here's a wild one for you guys!

My cubicle neighbor put some internet links in a document...some to Internet
sites, some to Intranet sites and some to files on our network.

He did the intra/internet links by opening the page in IE, copying the
address, then going to word, selecting 'Insert Hyperlink' and pasting the
link, using the 'Text to Display' to put the link title of the page he was
linking to.

He saved the document, then sent it to me. I can open all links (Internet,
Intranet and file) with no problem.

On his machine and on others, when he clicks a link to a secure intranet
page (i.e. https://applicationservername/applicationpagename/login_form.jsp)
he gets a Microsoft Word error that states:
"Unable to open
https://applicationservername/applicationpagename/login_form.jsp. A security
problem has occurred."

Now, this is a Word error, so we went through each setting in Word (Tools,
Options) for each tab.

My buddy also reset his Internet Explorer settings (just in case it was an
IE error being returned to Word and Word was displaying a general error
text), then we went through our IE settings for Intranet Security item by
item, syncing his with mine.

We cannot figure out what is going on...I even had him rename his normal.dot
in case there was something going on in the background.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this - why some (one, really)
machine can open his word doc with no problems, but on his own machine word
won't let him open a link that he can open directly from IE?

Thanks in advance guys!
