Can't open MS Word 97

Windows 95, MSWord 97: suddenly can't open any document in Word. Get the
following error message:

"There is not enough free memory to run this program. Quit one or more
programs and then try again."

I have no other programs open, and the memory is mostly free. The problem
started when I closed Word with a large amount of information on the
clipboard. The clipboard viewer shows that the clipboard is empty. I've
deleted temporary files. I've checked that virtual memory is enabled.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

Restart (or even better, shut down and turn back on) the computer.
(With Windows 95, that's pretty much the first thing to try in many
cases.)

Sorry, I don't know of any way to fix this without restarting.

Thanks, but this is a persistent problem. Shutting down and restarting
doesn't solve it.
