Can't open .msg file with Outlook

E

Eric

I've saved some messages as .msg files. The Windows file type associations
seem fine because in In Windows Explorer they're identified as Outlook Item.
When I try to open one of them from Windows Explorer, the Outlook window
opens, but the message does not.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

The only way I could open one was to drag the saved .msg message into the
Inbox and Open it from there. 99% sure Rt Clk/Open With from Explorer will
never work. Couldn't find a way within Outlook File/Open, only as described
but one of the experts may post. You could make a "Saved msg" Folder in Nav
Pane Folder List (under Personal Folders/hilite Personal
Folders/File/New/Folder), dump them all there, and Open as desired so as not
to mix with current Inbox. I think/hope that will work.

..msg Craig,

I tried but after dragging the .msg messages into the In box and a test
Saved Messages box, they were not there.

MPS, I'm surprised and out of ideas. My "test" was done within Outlook 2003
and it worked; I don't know if you saved from (ie) 02 and tried to Open in 03
& that's part of the issue- Post in AumHA Forums http://aumha.net/index.php -
They Respond well there.
FYI, if you Hi-light one, some, all Contacts, Cntrl C, Paste into an
Explorer Contacts Backup folder/file you've made, they Save as .msg. Have
never had a problem moving (even) 2002 .msg's into 03 Outlook Contacts page
and opening them.

Thanks, Craig.

I'll check it out the suggestion and the posting. Thank you.

My problem with .msg files is only as attachments. All other attachment
types open and all messages are fine. I have deleted Outlook 2003,
reinstalled, unchecked Unicode and still no luck. I receive no error
messages. I don't think the problem is with a sender with an earlier version
of Outlook as a ListServ to which I subscribe send posts as .msg attachments
and I only started having the problem with them recently.

CCraig,

My third response from AumHA Forums http://aumha.net/index.php did the
trick. The problem was Google Desktop -- I uninstalled it and the problem
went away.

Now, I have to figure out why Copernic won't index more than 100 or so
records and try to use it.

I appreciate your helkp.

Do you have Google Desktop Search installed? If so, that can interfere.

Instead of uninstalling, you can simply stop the indexing. In Add or Remove
Programs, select Google Desktop Search and click Change.

What I found out in my organization was that some users were using this process for over 10 yrs. They were putting email msg in folders that where in folders that where in folders etc. etc. etc....It created file corruption within the file structure because of long file names.
I moved the folder to the root of the drive and they were able to open the .msg with no problem. Problem solved
I had to change the way they have been doing work completely.

Hey HoopleHead:

Did you not even bother to see you were replying to a post from 2007? Do
you actually think the OP is coming back after all these years to read
your reply? You EggHeaders are true DeadHeads..learn how to use newsgroups.
