Can't Open my Docs after 12.1.5 Update

Bump!

The double click bug has hit me as well.

I have found lots of threads relating to this from earlier updates (way back in 2008) and also references to it being 'fixed.' Is it really? What are my options?

Of the hundreds of docs I can no longer open (even with File>Open) some were created right before the I DL'ed the update and never touched Firefox or Safari or Mail.app.

Can anyone help, please?

Thank you

Sorry: You can't "Bump" posts in here, this is a different mechanism. The
web server was broken for some months, and now it is fixed.

Sadly, that means none of the people giving help have seen you previous
posts. We're on a different server and your messages did not come through.

Please repeat your entire post, so we know what you are talking about ‹ we
didn't get enough this time to know what you want.

Cheers

Apologies, John, let me try again:

I updated to 2008 12.1.5 on my MacBook (Leopard) a day or two ago and this caused the issue where I cannot open my .doc files by double-clicking on them.

"(doc title) uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version. To help secure your computer, some file types are blocked from opening when you double-click the file or drag the file to the Microsoft Word icon. If you trust that this file is secure, you can open the file by clicking Open on the File menu."

The workaround given in the error message doesn't work (ie, File>Open in Word itself and saving as a docx). I get the same message about security concerns, etc. So i am completely unable to access my files in Word.

(and would prefer to stick to the .doc format over .docx in any event)

Some of the affected .docs were created in Mac 2008 days or hours before the update and saved in "compatibility mode' (ie, '97-2003 .doc). And even those aren't considered valid anymore, so it isn't just files created on my PC years ago that are being affected.

In researching the issue, it seems that the SP1 update fixed this for a lot of folks, but since I've got the latest update, I wonder what my next steps are to fix this? I know there's a lot out on there on this issue, but I am confused about whether it has been fixed or not... Most of the latest posts about it appear to date from mid-2008.

I appreciate any advice that you and this forum can give me. Is there a way to tell Word "no, really, it's alright... I trust these files?" :)

thank you!

Have you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions [or comparable 3rd party
utility] recently? Also, Control/Right -Click a problem file in a Finder
window & select Get Info... What's indicated as Opens With? Select MS Word
then click the Change All button.

Try those steps first then restart your Mac to see if the problem continues.

If it does continue log in while holding the Shift key then try opening one
of the files from the Finder & also try File> Open.

Reply with all results as we're still trying to get a handle on why this
happens to some people some of the time.

Hi --

Get Info revealed that all my .docs were indeed set to open in Word, so that wasn't the issue.

However, Disk Utilities> Repair Permissions & Rebooting did the trick -- at least so far a random selection of files old and new opened just fine on a double-click.

Thanks so much for your help, and I'll monitor the issue for the next few days to make sure it doesn't crop up again.

Thanks!

This solution did not work for me.

All of my word documents are now not opening in any program since the
update. Repairing permissions and rebooting did nothing. Same error message.
I cannot open any .doc in word, text edit, appleworks, or pages now.

I have been working on a document for three years in Word. This is the 50+
bug/error/"exception" that has threatened my entire project. I've lost it
twice already because of these completely random problems which had me switch
to mac in the first place.

Please respond with the solution thank you.

Dear Bradley,

No-one is going to be able to "respond with the solution" -- but once the
regulars here understand the problem it may be possible.

Unfortunately, the only text from you or "A" that the regular volunteers in
this newsgroup have ever seen is your three paragraphs immediately below and
the 4 paragraphs of "A". That's because we necessarily use newsreader
software to handle the large volume of posts that we answer -- we don't use
the Microsoft website front end that you came through.

So we're somewhat in the dark.

If you would care to give us full details of your problem (describe
*exactly* what is happening), including your version of Word (and including
the latest update you have applied) and ditto for your operating system
updates, we'll be pleased to help. :)

Please include what the error message is; a clarification of what you mean
by '50+ bug/error/"exception"' (I realize you or others may have mentioned
it in posts that we cannot see); and what "I've lost it twice already"
specifically means.

Cheers,

Additional to Clive's reply please post as a NEW MESSAGE rather than
"hijacking" another thread. If the solution worked for someone else but
didn't work for you it means that your issue is *different* in some way &
should be dealt with in a separate thread... Thanks!
