Can't open office programs...insufficient memory message

HELP!

I can no longer open any of the Microsoft Office 97 Pro
programs (Word 8.0, Excel 97, etc). I get a dialog box
that says that there is not enough memory or disk space to
run the program. In reality, I have 85% of my 128M ram
free and 2.8G free disk space. There have been no changes
in configuration or software since Office last ran
correctly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office to
no avail.

This is on a Compaq Presario 5150 running Windows 98
(first edition). I've tried reloading Windows but Compaq
won't except the generic Windows 98 or Windows 98SE.
There is too much on the system to wipe it and start
over. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is Word
8.0 the default word program or has someone tried to
update it?

Thanks.

Hi, B,

Try cleaning up your temp folder; usually c:\windows\temp.

You might also try a scandisk and defragmentation to see if that helps the
performance.
