Can't open or save word files in my email

NY Mom

I am unable to open or save some files (usually Word 97 documents) that are
sent to me. Anyone know of a fix? I have Office 2007 and Vista. The
dialogue box opens, I click open (or save) and it gets stuck in "transferring
file information.
