CAN'T OPEN PC-ORIGINATED WORD DOCS ON iMAC

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel sorry for the really basic new-guy question (i just got an iMac) but when i go to open some PC-originated .doc and all .docx files, i get an error that reads "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use or might not be a valid word document." !? anyone have any guidance? i've installed all the updates ... no luck.

Hi,

Are you running 10.3.9? Are you using Office Mac 2004? That might be an issue.
Try this..go to mactopia.com and see if you can download a converter - then try again to open your docs.

Before you do that, run a office update on your machine and see if it auto downloads the converter you need. If it does you are in like Flynn, if not then go to mactopia and look for the converter.

If you're certain that you're updated to 12.2.3 the next step is to run Disk
Utility - Repair Disk Permissions. Then see if you can open the files by
using Word's File> Open command as well as by double-clicking in a Finder
window and/or dragging the file icons to the Word icon in the Dock.

If you still have a problem it could be a matter of where the files are
stored as well as how you received the files. Is there a network involved?
Are they email attachments? You'll need to provide more details in order to
pursue the issue further.
