can't open previously saved excel worksheet. States "cannot find"

when I click on a recent item or worksheet icon, I get a message that windows
cannot find....... make sur you typed the name correctly and try again. I've
had this happen in previous versions of excel and had to reinstall the
program, is there an easier fix for this?
