Can't Open Saved Word Files

I have an HP Pavilion notebook (ze4900) running Windows XP SP 2 (40 GB hard
drive, 512K RAM). It has a brand new hard drive because the original hard
drive died when the machine was only three months old. I had a problem with
MS Word 2000 before the hard drive died, and now that I've reinstalled that
program, the problem is back, unchanged. I have spent hours on the telephone
with paid MS technical support people. They were supposed to send me links
to Web sites today where I could pick up some sort of additional service
pack that would solve this thorny problem. I wrote to them via e-mail but
have had no response.

I can CREATE documents in Word; I can retrieve them if they're on the list
of recently accessed files; but if they're not on that list, I cannot open
any saved file. Depending on God knows what, I get the message "Word has
encountered a problem and needs to close. (Etc.)" or else "The document name
or path is not valid. Try these suggestions. *Check the file permissions for
the document or drive. *Use the file open dialog box to locate the document.
(C:\...\Downeast Graphics 6.29.05.doc)." Unfortunately, none of these
suggestions works.

I am at my wits' end, as Word is one of the three crucial programs that I
use every day.

Many thanks in advance for all suggestions.

Send the computer back with the complaint that you want your money back
because it's not fit for its purpose, and buy one from another manufacturer.

It's not the computer, it's the Word 2000 program. Every other program on
the machine works just fine.

Yes, I realise. But if the computer can't be made to operate Word then I
think it's not a fit product. Either HP can make it work or they can't. And
if they can't then back it should go.
