Can't open the communication device error message

I

ian

Using a G5 OS 10.3.2 and latest version of office 2004 - Entourage.
Suddenly, and having done nothing t machine no installs etc, when I
run send& recieve I get the message Internet connect- failed to open
communication device. I get this whether or not the USB modem or
internal modems are connected to net or not (although it used to be
that even if i was off-line the modem would dial up recieve any
messages and hang up)

Don't know where to go with this but I can't recieve any email at the
moment.
Tried repairing permissions on the mac HD and making only one modem
available via network panel but no change.

I spent two days trying to resolve the above mentioned error and stumbled
on a solution that worked for me, maybe you could give it a try. I basically
deleted my network configuration for each "Location" and redefined them
using the same information before. I am using a dial-up connection so the
instructions below pertain to that.

Go to system preferences and open network preferences (or click on apple
icon on top left corner of screen and select Location -> Network Preferences
on drop down menu)
Note the Account/Password/dial up number information
Drop the "Location" Menu and select "Edit Locations..."
Select the locations you are working with click "Delete"
Click "Apply Now" at the bottom of the Network window
Drop the "Location" Menu again and select "New Location..."
Provide a name of your choice
Fill in the Account, Password, and dialup numbers
Click "Apply Now"
Now, connect and attempt Send/Receive Again

I only have dialup to test this right now, perhaps this may work for Ethernet,
VPN, and Airport as well. Good luck.
