can't open word 2000 document in word 2003

I am trying to open a word file that was modified in word 2000. When I try
to open the file I get an error message with some malarky about file
permissions or free disk space or to use the text recovery converter. There
are no permission problems I can open any other file so I have lots of free
space. And text recovery converter gives me the same error message. I can
open the file again in word 2000 no problem.
Any suggestions would be welcome thanks

Did you trying opening it using the "Open and Repair" command in Word
2003? You can find it in the Open dialog box under the Open drop-down.

Yes I have tried this and I get the same error message. Still confused as to
why this is a problem. If you have any other ideas please let me know.
