Can't open Word 2000 SR-1

Dan

A few days ago my Word started messing up and no matter
what I try it won't open. When I click on the icon to
open it, the Word logo (splash screen) comes up, but
nothing happens. I have to end up restarting my
computer. I have tried reinstalling it, but its still the
same problem. I have Norton Anti Virus, and I have
uninstalled it and tried Word, but it still didnt work. I
have Adobe Acrobat, but it has never caused a problem with
it, so I doubt that is the problem. I have looked here,
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.ht
m but it seems that none of those work for me. Please
help.

Hi Dan,

Does Word start if you use the /a switch described in the article?
e.g. go to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

Additionally, uninstalling Norton does not unregister the DLL for the
"Office Plug-in" option. Either reinstall Norton AV and disable the
"Office Plug-in" option or search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details on the
unregister command if you need them:

Hi Dan,

By chance, do you see the Word task in the Taskbar? If so then the
Word application window may be opening off the Desktop.

Here are a few things to try to get it back:

- Open another window, right-click an empty area of the Taskbar and
select "Cascade"

If that doesn't work then:

- Right-click the Word task and click "Restore" if necessary
- Right-click again and select "Move"
- Use one of the arrow keys on the keyboard to "lock in" the move
command
- Use your mouse and see if you can move it back to the Desktop

If the above doesn't work then follow the steps in this article for
recreating the Word\Data key in the Registry. Note that all you need
to do is rename/delete the Toolbars value of the key instead of
recreating the entire key:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm

If you do not see the Word task in the taskbar, just to verify, does
Word start if you go to Star/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.
