Can't open Word after installing a DirectX update

My son recently downloaded a DirectX update, which upon
installation crashed his system. He was able to restore,
but now he cannot open Word (and several other
applications. He gets the following message "Microsoft
Word has not been installed for the current user. Please
run setup." He also is having trouble with MSN messenger
and Hotmail, but can use IE to get on the internet. Any
thoughts?

If you use Start, Run and type in

winword /r

and press enter, does Word start now?
