Can't open Word docs from Windows Explorer when Word not already o

I've recently developed a strange and annoying problem in Word 2003.
If I try to open a document from Windows Explorer, it opens Word, but does
not open the document. No blank document either. I can go back to explorer,
click again, and the document will open. If Word is already open, the
document opens the first time. Also, if I try to open a document from within
Word (file, open), it works fine.
If I do the same with an Excel Spreadsheet, everything works correctly.
Office 2003 running under Windows XP SP2, uptodate w/ patches.
Any help will be greatly apprecicated.

Some additional info:
1. I ran a re-register (winword.exe /r)
2. Ran a repair
3. Did an uninstall/reinstall
Nothing changed.

Not sure if this applies to your situation or not, but I have a similar
situation. I 'think' I have resolved my problem by un-installing a recently
installed program: Scansoft's PDF Create 4. Not sure what the conflict was
(certainly they should live together OK), but, with fingers crossed, my
problem has not recurred in 24 hours since uninstalling the PDF program.
