Can't open word docs

When I try to open word it opens splash screen, shows
working icon, eventually pop up saying "resources are
extremely low do I want to exit. computer freezes,

I have plenty of memory, exel,ppp,access,front page, all
open and funktion fine.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office XP, run several
virus programs ...??????????
