Can't open Word document HELP

I have a very important Word document I am working on.
I have had no problems with it till now. I just opened it
and all I get is the I beam cursor. I can do nothing
except go to Windows task manager and end the application.
I see it using 100% of CPU, approx 95% with WINWORD.EXE.
I can open the document with Wordpad but the formatting is
all screwed up.
This is Word 2000 on Win 2000.
How do I get around this? I need this document back.
