Can't Open Word documents

K

Kevin

Ok. I've got a PowerMac with operating system 8.6 which I recently
upgraded from system 8.? to system 8.6. I'm pretty sure the word
documents I wrote were while I was using the previous system.
Anyway, I've got these documents and they're sitting on my file menu
but when I try to access them I get the message "Word cannot access
the document "document"" and I have tried other methods of opening
the document with no luck. So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how
I might access these word-created documents.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin:

What happens when you use File>Open from within Word to access these
documents?

The error you are seeing usually means "The document is not where I
remembered it to be."

Can you create a document in WOrd 98, save and close it then open it
again in Word ?? Did you check your hard drive for directory damage ??

Kevin:

Is that message "Cannot 'access'..." or "Cannot 'open'..." ??

There's a big difference.

The first message means "The file is not there"

The second message means "The file is not a Word document, or it is damaged
beyond repair."

Cheers

Yes. When I create new documents I can open
them. It's the old documents that won't open. Can you
tell me how to check my hard drive for directory
damage? ~Thanks for the help.

If you don;t have any special tool for that, the easiest is to boot on a
system CD and use DiskUtility from there. To boot on a system CD, put it
in the drive and reboot pressing the C key.
Nevertheless, what you descriibe makes me think it might not be
directory damage (though checking the drive is a good thing to do). It
looks more like the files you created before were corrupted for some
reason.
