Can't open WORD -- Runtime error

V

Virgil Smith

When I try to start WORD or EXCEL (running Win2000) I get an error message
with "Visual C++ Runtime Library" in the title bar. The message says:

Runtime error!

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual
way.
Please contact the application's support team for more info.

Anyone have any idea how to deal with this? I tried a re-install of WORD and
uploaded Office Service Pack 3, but the problem is still there.

Thanks for any advice,

-lmc-

I'm having the same exact problem with one of my users!
I'm hoping to find an answer in here!!

I found the problem!!
This computer had 3 'normal.dot' files. A forth had a ~ in front of the
file name.
I deleted them all which is an OK thing to do since Normal.dot is recreated
automatically when Word starts.
PROBLEM SOLVED!!

Thank you for the info, Dave, but that fix didn't work for me. I removed all
the "normal.dot" files, including the one with the ~, but still have the
problem.

I'm hoping one of the MS gurus will reply with a solution.

My thanks to you, also, Terry, but I have already gone through all of the
procedures listed in the MVPS FAQs document with no luck. Note that
the problem is not confined to WORD -- EXCEL has the same problem
so it appears to be something common to the two apps.

Any further suggestions (I hope)?

There's definitely nothing in Program Files, Microsoft Office, Office 11,
Startup and there are no custom macros listed under Tools, Options, Macros
in either Word or Excel?

I can't open EXCEL, so I can't tell, but I can get into WORD by running
winword /a and there are no macros listed there.

If it opens using the /a switch (Safe Mode), it proves conclusively that
this is a third party add-in that is causing the problem. How long have you
had the problem and what did you install that caused the problem? This
doesn't happen on its own. If there's nothing in Startup, and no macros
installed and normal.dot isn't corrupt (wouldn't affect Excel), there must
be a COM add-in causing the problem.

But as I said, some third party utility/application or whatever has
installed something incompatible with Office 2003. You need to find out what
was installed.

OK, I found the problem. Following your latest suggestion, I un-installed
Adobe Acrobat 7.0 upgrade that I had put in about a week ago.

WORD and EXCEL then came up in fine shape!!

The strange thing is that I then re-installed Acrobat and still everything
works
OK. Guess the original install mungled some file (in Office start-up?), and
it
was OK the second time around.

Anyway, Terry, thanks much for your help.

Best regards,

From all previous reports of Acrobat 7, it inhibits Word saving the
normal.dot by design. There's a rough workaround: edit the Windows registry.
You need to find the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\PDFMaker.OfficeAddin]

and change the subkey called "LoadBehavior" from a value of 3 to 0

Terry, he's claiming that uninstalling and reinstalling have solved the
problem. How likely is that?

Well folks,
There is the common thread I have with this discussion.
My user had just installed Acrobat 7.
The deletion of the Normal.DOT files was all I needed to do but it is good
to know that there could be problems.
LOOOOVE these newsgroups!!
