Can't preview or print any Word documents

J

Joe_Bosco

MS Office for MacBook....Word documents created do not show up in print preview. Print command creates blanks in printer. All other Office docs preview and print just fine.

The Word docs do attach and email properly for opening and viewing and printing from other Macs and PC's

Immensely frustrating

Hi Joe -

Since you don't offer any specifics nobody here can either - I'm afraid
"Macbook" & "Office" tell us nothing.

Make sure OS X is updated,
Makes sure your version of Office is updated,
Make sure your printer driver is updated,
Repair Disk Permissions,
Restart your Mac

If you still have a problem post back with complete details - *Version*
specifications are critical in an issue of this nature. There are probably
close to 200 (or more) possible combinations of "Office", "OS", and "Mac"
when you take into consideration various updates & microprocessors.

I'm guessing he's in OS 10.5.2, he's using Word 2008, and he has a Xerox
printer. In which case, it's a known bug: shout (loudly!!) at Xerox. We're
waiting on a fix from them.

Sorry, the bad news is that we can't help... It appears that the Apple OS X
Printing Subsystem has a bug in it on OS 10.5.2.

Yours is the first report I have seen of it affecting a Samsung printer: who
makes the engine for that, I wonder?

Word and PowerPoint do not contain any printing software. They simply hand
the job over to the OS X print subsystem. It would appear that something
has changed in the operating system, and print commands produced by the
drivers for certain kinds of printer, that work perfectly well in OS 10.4
through 10.5.1 now suddenly don't work. Whatever Microsoft Office is doing
seems to work OK for all the other printers out there. It appears to be a
problem restricted to specific models from specific manufacturers.

We were given only one work-around for this: set the print resolution to 600
dpi or below, if your printer driver permits that. But it didn't work for
everyone.

Sorry: There are many people waiting anxiously for the resolution to this
one.

Cheers

I have exactly the same problem with a new IMac, Leopard and the Samsung CLX-3160FN laser printer. Nice to know I'm not going mad...I'm new to Mac, did the print resolution solution work? If so, can you give me some steps to do it?

Hi Barbara:

I doubt if it's worth trying: I don't think it works.

And only a person who owns a Samsung printer can tell you, because the
options in the dialog box are provided by the printer driver.

Go to File>Print and see if you have an option "Paper Quality and Type" in
the third drop-down where it says "Copies and Pages". If you do, it "might"
be in there.

Cheers

For my Brother, it's called Print Settings. Basically, explore all the
options that you can access by changing Copies and Pages to something
else, and you should find a resolution change somewhere. It might be
labeled "draft quality" vs. "fine quality" or something, as well or
instead of a resolution dpi setting--you need to try a lower quality
than currently.

Thank YOU for posting this information. It's really important to us if
people get a fix to come back and tell the world what worked.

Cheers
