Can't print from black ink cartridge

R

Russ

After upgrading my PowerMac G5 to Leopard I cannot get Word 2004 (or Excel 2004) to print black text on my Canon MP160 printer. They only print from the color ink cartridge which gives only gray colored text. Other programs such as TextEdit and Pages print the text properly. I am using the latest versions of both Word 2004 and Excel 2004 as well as the most recent version of the Canon printer driver which is supposed to be Leopard compatible. If I reboot to Tiger then both Word and Excel print properly.

I have tried changing printer settings but nothing seems to help.

Anyone have any suggestions ?

Thanks for any help.

That's the second report of this I have seen.

Would you please Remove or rename ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word
Settings (10)

Since you re-installed, did you re-apply all of the service packs for Office
2004? If no, then please re-apply 11.3.9 and everything later.

Then remove the printer entirely, reboot, and then add it back in again, and
tell me what difference it makes (if any).

Hope this helps

Thanks for your suggestions. They seem to have worked for any new documents that I create from Word or Excel. But when I print Excel spreadsheets that I had saved previously, they still come out with a light gray text rather than black. Both newly created and previously saved Word documents seem to print properly now.

I have been using the latest versions of both Word 2004 (11.3.8) and Excel 2004 (11.3.7) which is what the latest Office Upgrade (11.3.9 and now 11.4.0) left me with. Also I did not find a Word Settings (10) file in my Microsoft foler in Preferences, but there was an Office Settings (11) which I deleted.

In existing spreadsheets, check the font colour is set to "Automatic".

If it isn't, set it to "Automatic" (not 'Black')

Hope this helps

Thanks. The font color was set at "Automatic", but the printer still prints using the color ink cartridge. However, if I select "PDF" from the print menu and then print the .pdf file from "Preview", the printing is fine. The black text is then really black instead of gray.

Hi Russ:

If you go to File>Print... And change "Copies and Pages" to "Color Synch",
what options do you have there? Anything look useful?

Cheers

When I go to "Copies and Pages" I don't get a "Color Sync" option, instead there are two options involving color. One is "Color Matching", the other is "Color Options." If I select Color Matching, there are two radio buttons, Color Sync and Vendor Matching. Vendor Matching was selected, so I changed it to Color Sync and printed an Excel file. That didn't seem to change anything in the output. Still printing gray.

The Color Options selection just gives a series of sliding bars to control the intensity of the various colors. Changing them doesn't seem to affect my inability to print Excel files from my black ink cartridge.

Sorry, Russ: It's got me foxed. New documents are OK, but old ones are
bad?

I cannot think what could cause that. Let's hope someone else has a bright
idea.

Thanks anyway for your help. At least Word seems to be working correctly now. Since printing the old Excel spreadsheets works fine on Tiger, I can always reboot to Tiger and print them if necessary.

I plan to get Office 2008 soon and hopefully the problem will disappear.

Thanks again.
