Can't print graphics inserted with Link to File

Can anyone help with a problem with printing graphics inserted in a
Word document?

I'm inserting PNG graphics into a Word XP document using
Insert>Picture>From File>Link to File (to keep the size of the Word
document down). However, when I print, the graphics appear only as
outlines with a red cross.

Inserting the pitcures using Insert>Picture>From File>Insert works
fine, but increases the file size of the Word document, and as I have
140+ images, I'm not very keen to re-insert them all.

Is there a solution?

Thanks for this. I can't quite believe what your article is
suggesting about Word XP!!

Is the only solution to re-insert all my images? (Please say no!!)

(What kind of a piece of software is this...?!!)
