So that I understand fully, is the correct proceedure as follows
Press Print Screen, then open notepad or word and press ctrl +V and the
image should appear for the whole screen.
I have done this and nothing appears.
I must be doing something wrong?

You might try opening Word before you perform the screen capture. Certain
add-ins can clear the Clipboard when Word is started, and that might be the
issue here (though it shouldn't affect Notepad).

What happened was when I pressd ctrl +V I got an image but it was theimage
from the last time I used copy and paste in Word.
Is there a fault on my keyboard?

I would guess that this might be a keyboard issue. Either that key is not
working or it has been assigned to something else.
