Can't print to PDF

S

Steve Fox

My problem is not the one where Word X creates several pdf files if
there are section breaks. My problem is that it won't print ANY pdf
file! I get the pdf icon on the desk, but it's always empty. I've
tried every way to skin this cat with the print command, but to no
avail. I've done this many times before, but this time it won't work.
Help!

Forgot to ask... you said "this time it won't work". Is the problem
specific to one or just several files?

Hi Steve,

Do you still have the multiple-section document that wouldn't originally
print to a single PDF file? If so (or if anyone else has an example), would
you please send it directly to me and put Print To PDF in the subject line
(so it doesn't go into the junk mail folder :).

We're trying to reproduce the multiple-section document problem so we can
verify your workaround, but the multiple-section document we created is
printing just fine as a single PDF in the first place.

Thanks!

I'm back to square one (below). The same multiple-section document that
I saved as a PDF yesterday, now will not print ANY PDF file. Here are
the instructions from Word Help. I followed them to the letter, but
they do not work:

Print a document to a file
Microsoft Word supports exporting files to Adobe Portable Document
Format (PDF) files. Learn about when you would want to create a printer
file.
1. Open the document you want to print to a file.
2. Click Print on the File menu.
3. Click Output Options on the pop-up menu on the left side of the
dialog box, select the Save as PDF file check box, and then click Save.
4. In the Save As box, type a name that is different from the original
file name.
5. Locate the folder and disk where you want to save the file, and then
click Save.
Note When the Save as PDF file check box is selected, you can also
click Preview (Print dialog box) to output a file as a PDF and preview
it. Your computer does not need to be connected to a printer to do this.

I have now tried every way that I can see to print a Word X document
(one section) as a PDF file. I even tried in full Acrobat, but I get
the message that Acrobat can't open the file because it's either not a
supported file type, or has been somehow corrupted (the example they
give is having sent it as an e-mail attachment without proper coding --
whatever that means!).

Anyone else having this problem. The very odd thing is, I did print
this same doc as a PDF last week.

What happens if you save the file as PostScript and run Distiller on
it?

Have you tried changing your printer selection (e.g., either from or
to any printer)?

FWIW, I save as PDF every day and haven't had a problem. I know that
doesn't really help.

Also, on the chance that the document really is corrupt, try this: In
Preferences> Save, be sure "Allow Fast Saves" is off (and leave it off!!)
and "Always make Backup" is on. Then turn on Show/Hide formatting, copy all
but the very last paragraph mark and paste the whole thing into a blank, new
Word document. Do a Save. That should eliminate any corruption. Any help?

Also, I have the document you sent (thanks!) and will report on any info I
get, though it will probably be a few days.

JE,

Not sure how to use Distiller. When I select this from the Acrobat
folder, it always wants to go back to 9.2.2. So I stop the procedure.

I tried the printer thing. Thought it might be due to having a shared
one. Still a "no go," however.

Beth,

I did the Save stuff in Prefs (couldn't find the Show/Hide Formatting
thing), and I was able to Print as PDF from Word!!

Thanks.

BTW, it sure would make things easier in these threads if we all put our
new messages ABOVE existing ones. There is a preference to do this.

Thanks again!

Hi Steve,

You mean you turned off Allow Fast Saves and turned on Always Make Backup?
And then I assume you did another Save of the document? I guess the
document *was* corrupt after all but I'm surprised it got fixed without also
doing the copy and paste bit. Anyway, I'm glad you got your document
printing again, and don't ever turn on Allow Fast Saves again!

Incidentally, Show/Hide is the button on the Standard toolbar that looks
like a backwards paragraph mark. You can also toggle it on and off by
hitting Cmd>8 (unless it changed in Word X; I'm still in Word 2001 and some
keyboard commands are different).

As for top-posting vs. bottom-posting on newsgroups, that's a debate that
will never be resolved :). There are diehard top posters and diehard
bottom posters and the two will never agree. As for me, I prefer to top
post or post in-line. But if a bottom-posting trend has already established
itself on a particular thread, I'll usually follow suit in order to keep
things consistent.

Yes, unfortunately, Distiller is still a Classic application.

Distiller 5 is a Classic application.

Distiller 6 is OSX native. At least, what I have with Acrobat 6 Professional
is OSX through and through.

Yes, but "Allow Fast saves" was already off. Previous alerts.

Yes. Saved.

I did what you said: copy all but last para of the old doc into the
blank new doc.

Didn't have in on in the first place.

JE,

When I select Print/Output Options and check the "Save as File" box, I
only get "PDF" as an option. "Postscript" is grayed out.

Beth,

I should have added to my previous reply that I did not have to use
Print/Output Options to get a PDF. I merely used "Copies and Pages" and
clicked the "Save as PDF" button at the bottom of the window.

This might be useful info.

But what is the printer you have chosen at the time you print?
