Can't Print Word Document

G

George

I have a word document created in Word 2001(?) that will not print on
Word v.X. It is formatted for a sheet of labels, and all in the same font
(Avant-Garde). Of the things MS suggests for testing a document, I
have tried all that do not involve messing up the formatting - saving as
an .rtf document and reconverting to Word, cutting and pasting the
text (except for the last paragraph mark) into a new document, etc. I
have also tried saving it as a .pdf file, but as soon as I click on the ..pdf
file, it disappears, and clicking on "Preview" does not open up the
Preview program. I wanted to try printing just a selection, but the
Selection option on the print dialog box is grayed out - perhaps
because it is in a table format.

I can print other Word documents just fine, and printing from other
programs is not problem.

FWIW, when I try to open the program from within Word, it opens it up
without formatting, with all the formatting information listed at the end
of the file. I am running the latest version of Word (10.1.5, I believe)
and have the latest updates to OS 10.2.8 (I'm upgrading to Panther
next week). I am printing to a HP 4ML laser printer with an adapter - a
setup that has given me no problems in the past.

Any thoughts?

Hi George,

Open Word X and then go to File>Open. In the dialog box that appears, I
think you will find that the Show box says "Recover text from any file."
Change that to "All Office documents" or "All Word documents." Open the
older Word document. You should now see it properly formatted (providing
that it really *is* a Word document; you don't seem to be certain of that).

Save it as a Word X document and you should be fine.

Note: The "Recover text from any file" is a sticky setting. The File>Open
dialog will not default back to "All Word documents"; you have to reset it.
Anytime you open a Word document and see a lot of code at the end, suspect
the "Recover text..." setting and change it.

Hope this helps.

Hi George,

Actually, I should say "Hi George and anyone else who has trouble replying
to my posts using the MS web interface". In the future, use the following
portal to the newsgroups and you won't have any problem. (It's also a lot
nicer.)

As for your problem, George, I'm at a loss. It's possible for a template to
become corrupted but your document is not a template (it's merely based on
one) and you already used the tried-and-true method for uncorrupting a
document (copying all but the last paragraph mark into a new document). I
also don't understand why it wouldn't save as pdf.

Did you try using any of the other Avery templates while you were in Word X?
If not, run some tests. If the rest work and this one doesn't, that
certainly narrows it down. If none of them work, then something's wrong
within Word.

In regard to the latter possibility. It probably won't make any difference
but try repairing disk permissions: Go to Macintosh
HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select your hard disk,
then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair Disk
Permissions".

Hope something here helps.

Hi Beth,

Please forgive my sending this to you directly - the newsgroup software
couldn't bring up your message in the reply, and only gave me a "Post a New
Message" screen. Then when I wrote my reply and manually pasted yours in
below it, the message was rejected by the server because of some sort of
incorrect formatting, perhaps because it read your email address in the body
of the message. I wish I could post this on the newsgroup in case someone
else has the same problem I do, and if you wish to forward this to the
newsgroup, please feel free to do so.

At any rate, I tried your suggestion, and I encountered the problem I
described farther down in my message - it opened up with no formatting, and
with all the document properties appended to the end of the main document.

Since I posted my previous message, I sent the document in question to my
wife's computer, an iMac running OS 9.2, then opened it in Word 98 (which is
the version I created it on, not Word 2001). I printed it to the HP 4ML, and
it worked just fine.

I also created a new Word document in Word v.X and inserted a small table -
it printed just fine.

I finally created a new Word document in Word v.X and selected the Avery
label template I used in the original. I input all the information, and it
behaved just like my original document. The only way I could get the
document to be sent to the printer was if I went into Word's Properties >
Print and selected Print Data Only for Forms. Unfortunately, the only thing
that came out was a blank sheet of paper, though.

There seems to be something about the Avery template that Word v.X does not
like. I tried resetting the margins to Word v.X's preferences (it wants a
more generous bottom margin than the template requires), but that made no
difference.

If you have any further ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks again for your thoughts.
