Can't re-install Word 2000. Wrong product key

I use WinXP Home.

Two years ago I bought Microsoft Works 8, in order to get the bundled Word
2000.

Recently I was forced to re-install my operating system.

When I insert the Word 2000 CD, I am asked for a 25-digit product key.

The key that I have written on the CD is a 20-digit number that looks like
nnnnn-OEM-nnnnnnn-nnnnn

This is a similar key to the Works 8 CD (although I wasn't asked for that
key on re-installation).

I notice that someone else had a similar problem:

Can anyone give advice on how to re-install my Word 2000?

The laptop was preloaded with MS Works. I immediately uninstalled it and
loaded my own Office 97.

Later, I bought Works 8 simply to get Word 2000.

I'm sure I would have registered on installation. Does that mean that MS
will have the record of my Product Code? Is there a number I can call in the
UK?

Without the product key, you can't. Did you buy Works 8 when you bought your
computer or buy it elsewhere?

No, they will not. And I'm still not clear about your situation. Are you
saying you purchased Works Suite separate from your laptop? My answer to
your issue changes depending on that specific point.

I'm sorry if my meaning is not clear. Let me try again step by step.

This means that the new laptop had MS Works already installed.

This means that as soon as I received my new laptop, I uninstalled MS Works.

I had a legal copy of Office 97 and installed it.

This means that I wanted to upgrade to Word 2000 without buying Office 2000.
So I bought a legal Works 8 bundle, because the bundle contained Word 2000.
(This is a later, different version of Works than the preloaded version.)
Are you saying you purchased Works Suite separate from your laptop?

So the answer is "Yes".
