can't remove a graphic line

Word has autoformatted all of the strings of dashes (-------------) in
a large document to graphic lines. It's too late to undo this. Is there
any way to search for these lines so they can be converted back to
dashes? How do you even select one of these lines?

Hi ng1-

The problem is that the dashes get converted to paragraph Borders.

Assuming you have no borders you want to retain, just do a cmd+a (or any
command you prefer to Select All), then go to Format>Borders and Shading.
Click the Preset Icon for None (even though it will probably appear to be
selected) and when you click OK the 'lines' will be gone.

Unfortunately the dashes will be gone too, but you can retype them without
triggering the autoborder feature as long as you don't press the Return key.
For future reference you can turn the feature of as necessary if you go to
Tools>AutoCorrect>AutoFormat As You Type and remove the check for Borders.
Keep in mind that the feature only works 'as you type', so you can turn it
back on any time after typing and it will not convert existing dashes.

Hi,

I have experienced that many times.

As far as I understand (I have experienced the same issue and fixed it)
this is related to an autoformat feature of Word. Turning off such
autoformat options at "Format/Autoformat" fixes it. And you lose
nothing and your continuous lines become again your original dashed
lines.

That reminds me of something that I have requested from Microsoft for
many years now, yet they never implemented:

1. Distribute Office in general and Word in particular with no active
features for automatic autoformatting. Anything. Not even autosave,
spell checking or auto grammar and other features found in
"Word/Preferences". Let each user activate the features that they want
and only the ones that they want. I would usually activate only smart
quotes.

2. If the above is not possible, at least please include a feature to
do the following with a single click in the "Word/Preferences": disable
all automatic formatting and other automatic features.

That is extremely useful to fix these problems and also when you have
to uninstall and reinstall Office or Word because of problems or
because you want to do a clean installation for some reason, or for new
versions of Office, thus saving lots of trouble and time re-customizing
again and again each time that you install.

My two cents,

Actually, all text that has been auto-formatted will remain auto-formatted.
The Preference only affects whether future text is auto-formatted.
That reminds me of something that I have requested from Microsoft for

My two cents,

We'll take these ideas into consideration. Thanks!
