Can't remove default black background behind text

I've inserted a number of excel charts into powerpoint and am working with a
dark blue background.
I just want the text to be white, and show up against the background. For
some reason, ppt (or another component of the office) is inserting a black
area behind each piece of text in the title and both x and y axis. Is there
a way to remove this. I don't want to have to force an additional coloured
background in the cart, because I can't match it with the background in the
slide master.

There has to be a way to work around this.

You may need to open the chart, select the objects, choose Format | Object,
and on the Font tab, change the Background color to transparent.

You might also try recoloring the charts using this technique:
