Can't remove double spaces

Every document I type comes out double spaced, even when
formating is set to single space. How can I stop double
spacing? I'm using Word 2003

Make sure you have no Space Before or After (Format | Paragraph) and that
the vertical alignment (Layout tab of Page Setup) is set to Top.
