Can't remove field code's end bracket that was left in footer

Hi there,

Someone in our firm has a document in which he inserted page numbering into
a footer and then started deleting some extra codes that came in with it. It
appears that the end bracket of what used to be a field code is left and we
can't get it out. We have tried to cut, delete, reinsert field codes, search
and replace, Alt F9, Shift F9 and more, but it won't leave, and prints out on
al l18 pages.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Have you checked Tools/Options/Print (tab) to make sure that the "Field
Codes" is unchecked (located under the Include with document section)?

Yes the field codes is unchecked for Printing. There is a just a single
bracket that used to be part of a pair, I'm assuming, showing on the left
side of every footer that is resistant to anything we do. It's a large
document, with lots of setup and formatting,so the man in question doesn't
want to copy and paste into a new document, without the last paragraph
return, which would probably solve the problem.

We've run into this bug before -- not sure what causes it. We never could
figure out how to get rid of that orphaned field bracket. Instead we
reconstruct our footers.

Try the following:

1. insert a blank section at the beginning of your document

2. make sure the header/footer (wherever the problem is) is _not_ set to
different first page and that the first section header/footer (whichever) is
blank

3. navigate through each subsequent header/footer
- making sure they are not set to different first page
- then linking them to previous

4. all your footers in all sections should now be blank

5. recreate your footers (page numbers, text etc)
