can't remove rules

Probably due to my using the same .pst on OfficeXP, then Office2003, and
back to OfficeXP, I have a slew of rules that don't work and can't be
deleted. When you select them in the Rules Wizard, the options to the right,
such as Remove, are grayed out.

Any ideas on how to get rid of these obsolete rules?
