can't rename custom page sizes

In Page Setup, if I need to create a new page size, when I select Manage Custom Sizes there is another window that opens called Custom Page Sizes. A new page size named Untitled appears with its size attributes available to modify and a button for OK. The next custom size you create is then named Untitled 1, then Untitled 2, and so on. There appears to be no way to rename those custom sizes to something that makes more sense or allows you to remember what that size was for future use, like Half Sheet or Note Card. Is this a bug in Office 2008?

Try double-clicking the name to activate the renaming ability.

That "Manage Custom Sizes" dialog is an OS dialog, actually, not a Word
one. The system shares custom paper sizes, and you can create a custom
size in Word, Pages, Text Edit, etc, and have it available in all those
programs. So blame Apple for the need to double-click, which doesn't
match any other renaming method in OS X and is quite unintuitive, IMO.

I still believe that there's a bug in how Word interacts with the Mac OS to manage custom page sizes. When I'm in Word and I want a custom page size, clicking on Manage Custom Sizes in Page Setup opens a new window with an Untitled page size already added into the list without me clicking the plus sign to add a new page size. That Untitled page size cannot be renamed even when I double-click.

However, when I went into another application and repeated the same process, nothing appeared in the Custom Page Size until I clicked on the plus sign to add a new custom page, and that Untitled page COULD be renamed by double-clicking.

That leads me believe that it's Word not communicating with the OS correctly. JFYI- I'm using Mac OS 10.4.11 and Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac Version 12.0.0 (071130). I see that a 12.0.1 update is available. I'll install that and see if that fixes the problem.

I'm also on 10.4.11, but I have installed the Office 2008 12.0.1 update,
and I can't duplicate what you report here. Word doesn't randomly create
an Untitled page, and I see the same custom items in Word, Pages, and
Text Edit. I think I remember messing with this a bit before the update,
as well, and don't think that happened, because I've only got the one
Untitled that I clearly remember creating. Can you delete that mystery
Untitled and see if Word re-creates it?

I've applied the 12.0.1 update since posting the previous message and the problem seems to have been resolved. I believe the update took care of it.
