Can't Repair, Uninstall, or Reinstall Office Pro 2003

Windows Update was hanging recently on an update for Microsoft Office 2003
(KB969681) so I thought that I would insert my original installation CD
(Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 full version) and try to repair
the installation.

When I try to either repair or uninstall after several minutes a message box
comes up saying something about Windows installer unable to continue and
gives the options to Retry or Cancel.

How do I get things back in order?
